Climate change makes hurricanes like Irene more destructive | Grist

Climate change makes hurricanes like Irene more destructive | Grist: ""Owing to higher SSTs [sea surface temperatures] from human activities, the increased water vapor in the atmosphere leads to 5 to 10 percent more rainfall and increases the risk of flooding," as NCAR senior scientist Kevin Trenberth put it in an email to me Saturday.

"However, because water vapor and higher ocean temperatures help fuel the storm, it is likely to be more intense and bigger as well," Trenberth writes.
On the third point, warming also extends the range of warm SSTs, which can help sustain the strength of a hurricane as it steers on a northerly track. As meteorologist and former hurricane hunter Jeff Masters has explained:"

Cross and Cutlass: What do you think? Are we living in the last days?

Cross and Cutlass: What do you think? Are we living in the last days?: "In the last few weeks, the U.S. stock markets have tanked. Americans have lost more than $2.3 trillion in personal wealth. 14 million American are out of work. We face a double-dip recession. Our debt is increasing daily. And Washington is frozen in partisan gridlock, arguing over cutting what is essentially pennys in comparison to our debt.
And still Iran is building nuclear weapons unhindered, Syria and Libya are slaughtering thousands, Egypt has imploded, and Israel is increasingly threatened.

More than 100 rockets, mortars and anti-tank missiles have been fired from Gaza at Israeli towns and cities along the south. A suicide bomber also detonated himself near the Israel-Egyptian border. Eight Jews were killed last week when a jihadist attacked an Israeli public bus, and at least 30 were wounded. A rocket hit a home in Beersheva on Saturday night, killing one Israeli and wounded four others. Dozens more Israelis have been hospitalized for shock. Israel has struck back with airstrikes against selected terror targets, but the violence has only escalated."

Use Multiple Online Cloud Storage Services for Free and Organized Backup

Use Multiple Online Cloud Storage Services for Free and Organized Backup: "Dropbox offers you 2GB of free storage that you can expand to a full 16GB by referring others to the service. Because Dropbox also syncs files to your other computers and makes your files easily accessible on your mobile devices, it's a good candidate for your primary work files.
SugarSync offers 5GB of free storage (sign up here) and syncs files just like Dropbox. While I prefer Dropbox, SugarSync has a bunch of features Dropbox does not at it's especially good at handling media files or any files on your hard drive (while Dropbox only really syncs files inside your Dropbox, unless you circumvent that limitation). SugarSync is a good option for syncing important files that you keep outside Dropbox, but I think is especially good for your photos. "

WinSCP :: Understanding SSH

WinSCP :: Understanding SSH: "However, when you connect to a server for the first time, WinSCP has no way of telling whether the host key is the right one or not. So it gives the warning shown above, and asks you whether you want to trust this host key or not.
Whether or not to trust the host key is your choice. If you are connecting within a company network, you might feel that all the network users are on the same side and spoofing attacks are unlikely, so you might choose to trust the key without checking it. "

Large earthquake hits Virginia, shakes ground up and down East coast | NJ.com: The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude 5.8 earthquake was half a mile deep and centered near Louisa, Va., about 40 miles northwest of Richmond. Chai and the number 18

Chai and the number 18: Judaism places great value on life and the word 'chai' has become symbolic of that value and the hope that goes with it.

The Hebrew word 'chai' is spelt with the Hebrew letters chet and yud. These letters are often used to form a decorative item, for example to be worn on a chain around the neck.

In Hebrew, each letter has a numeric value. The numeric value of chet is 8, and the numeric value of yud is 10; thus the numeric value of the world chai is 18. Because of this association between chai ('life') and the number, 18 has come to be seen as something of a lucky number. A common practice is for a donation to charity to be made in a multiple of $18 - for example the donation will be $18, or $36, or $90, or $180 (of course, larger multiples are also possible and sometimes given).

The Man Behind Android's Rise - WSJ.com

The Man Behind Android's Rise - WSJ.com: BY AMIR EFRATI

At the core of Google Inc.'s $12.5 billion Motorola deal is Silicon Valley engineer Andy Rubin, who in six years has reordered the wireless market and positioned the Internet giant as a central player in it.

Mr. Rubin, 48 years old, has changed Google's organizational structure and become one of the most powerful people at the company. Under his leadership, the operating system known as Android has become the most widely used software on smartphones—surpassing the creations of Apple Inc. and Nokia Corp.—and powering tablets from many companies.

Home prices figures are nonsense - Globes

Home prices figures are nonsense - Globes: "The Ministry of Finance has told us every month for the past 18 months that home prices have been falling, by comparing only new apartments sold from one month to the next in the same project. The problem - beyond the fact that we all see how much these figures are divorced from reality - is that the Tax Authority reports that 4,748 new homes were sold altogether in the second quarter of 2011 - just 22% of all real estate transactions."

The Seagull - Anton Chekhov

The Seagull - Anton Chekhov: "Meryl Streep returns to the stage after a twenty-year absence and provides a rich, playful performance that recalls Margo Channing in All About Eve. Prancing, dancing, even cart-wheeling on stage, she creates the production’s most compelling and complicated character, magnanimous one moment, yet, in the blink of an eye, demanding and petulant as a school child. She seduces both Trigorin and the audience with her charm, sensuality and confidence.
Kevin Kline, as Trigorin, gives the most natural performance. While he shies away from revealing Trigorin’s calculating nature, especially in his encounters with Nina, he is the most comfortable with his lines"

Do You Keywords Mean Something Else?

Do You Keywords Mean Something Else?: "Seriously, though, you don't want to be on the same page in the search results as something with which you wouldn't want to be associated, if you can possibly avoid it. That's why you need to be thorough when you do your keyword research.

There's one other point I'd like to address on the topic of avoiding keyword misalignment. The keywords that people use for particular things change over time."

The group also takes into consideration businesses that apply recent technology to innovate traditional markets."

Closing Angel Investors

Closing Angel Investors: "I speak of the Revenue Royalty Certificate (sometimes called the Revenue Sharing Agreement). Here's why it's such a great tool for the entrepreneur to use. Being a hybrid it's initially set up as a loan to the company. The loan payments are scheduled to commence on a certain date. This is usually six to twelve months after the loan is made in order to give the company time to grow. After that date the payments are made out of net sales. So for example, if the revenue royalty is 2% that means that every month that percentage is paid back to the investors."

Business Models

Business Models: "understand that the business model always precedes the business plan. In fact, a convincing business model is often all that is needed by a savvy entrepreneur to make the commitment to pursue a fast moving opportunity. Conversely, a business plan takes several months to put down on paper during which the window of opportunity may shut. For this reason, entrepreneurs who need to be agile and fast moving place more importance on formulating the business model than on writing a business plan."

Capital Raising Reading

Capital Raising Reading: "Zero to IPO by David Smith

The essential manual for anyone looking at starting a fast growth company financed with other people's money. This manual does the best job I have ever seen of explaining the four possible outcomes for such a company. It uses a dramatic graphic called 'Startup Island' to enable you to grasp the big picture. Startup Island has three peaks in descending order of elevation (i.e., valuation): IPO, cashflow sale, and asset sale. The fourth possible outcome is landing in the 'Shutdown Sea'. (No, investor-backed companies will not be allowed to just limp along indefinitely.)"

Can Groupon Build a $20 Billion Business on Weird Jokes? - Forbes: "seldom cut out for the comparatively boring task of turning those ideas into stable, profitable businesses. A new profile in Vanity Fair of Groupon founder Andrew Mason suggests he may be a prime example of that phenomenon.

On the verge of taking his company public with an expected valuation of $20 billion, Mason continues to insist that aggressive whimsy is a key ingredient in Groupon’s special sauce. “As we get bigger, instead of being like most companies, conforming and becoming more normal, we want to become weirder,”"

Funding Chain: "The IPO is now in sight and the C-round is used to 'fatten the pig' as much as possible in addition to preparing the company for it. Often this preparation includes replacing management with C-level officers who are known to and respected by Wall Street.

-Venture Capital B-Round
